Self-Discipline: The Importance of Selecting the Right Words to Say

Words are delivered in the largest volume everyday. Some words are sent out through written letters, email, and text messages while others are spoken verbally through a phone, in a screen or face to face. People may not have realized this with an ultimate realization but life goes round and round with words creating a great impact on it. This is the interesting topic that I would like to share to you here - the role of words and the importance of selecting the right words to say.
Below are three reasons why being tactful is an essential character that humans should own.
Words Have Meaning
When you hear someone greet you "hello", what thoughts come right next in your mind? Lots of thoughts will come in a person's mind but basically, you will think that the person is nice and friendly. In connection to that, you may think that you look or dress nice and pleasant because you are being greeted. The mere greeting of hello creates a pleasant feeling because the meaning of "hello" is attention or notice given by other people to you. On the contrary, if a person passes by with lifted eyebrows and without a word, what is the implication? You will conclusively think that the person is angry at you or he or she doesn't like you. This will in turn build up tension between you and the person and this is not healthy to human relationships.
Words Have Underlying Emotions
Every time people talk, I usually consider at the back of my head his feelings behind saying the words he or she said. If you make greetings, it means that you are happy. If you speak words of advice to a friend in problem, it means that you are concerned. If you scold a kid, it may be because you are angry at that moment. So you see? The words that come out of our mouths have underlying emotions and because of emotions, people at times become bias in their treatment to others. Having the control over your emotions is valuable in learning to be tactful. No matter how ugly the feeling is, you should make it a point to say the right words at the right time.
Words Call An Action
Some words make the hearers respond with an action. Depending on the type of statement that is delivered, it will create a response on others, which may be positive or negative. Here comes in the essence of knowing the right words and saying the right words. By being tactful, you are more likely to convey the right action which others should do.
Words may just be words, but they are as sharp as an arrow that can hurt the feelings of others. They are also as lovely as the morning sun which brings joy and comfort. Always remember that being tactful is one excellent human virtue.
